The School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-Disciplinary Studies (SOITS) was established to develop academic programmes and courses that address the complex dynamics of multi-faceted social issues and processes. The School functions as an enabling space to foster interdisciplinary academic studies and research drawing upon theoretical, empirical and methodological resources cutting across disciplinary boundaries. The School promotes interactive academic co-existence amongst scholars of diverse specializations facilitating convergence of disciplines and transactional mutuality of holistic wisdom. The programmes offered by the School are in the area of Environmental Studies, Philosophy,Folklore and Culture, Sustainability Science, Diaspora Studies. The School offers Ph.D. programmes in Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies and Environmental Sciences along with 7 Masters Programmes, 6 Post Graduate Diploma, 1 Bachelors, 2 Certificate and 1 Awareness Programme. The School also offers 4 online programmes and 11 MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course).

The School was established in 2009 to promote interdisciplinary research and academic studies. Since its inception, the School has been developing academic programmes in various interdisciplinary fields. The School aims to foster academic co-existence among scholars of different disciplines. The discipline of Environmental Studies was merged in the School in the year 2016. Since then the School houses two disciplines: Interdisciplinary Studies and Environmental Sciences. The School has been very actively organizing seminars, workshops and conferences to discuss and deliberate on the issues of national and global importance. The School has a strong alumni network comprising of the renowned position holders in various offices of repute.
The School was awarded the Best School Award at the 36th Foundation Day of IGNOU held on 19th November 2022.

The School provides an opportunity to explore the interdisciplinary that exists between the academic disciplines. The School is dedicated to providing high-quality education, research, and field practicum training in areas of philosophy, human values, environmental studies, climate change, sustainability sciences, occupational health, waste management, disability studies, with a focus on promoting social justice, community empowerment, and sustainable development.
The School houses two disciplines viz. interdisciplinary studies and Environmental Studies. The two disciplines play an indispensable role in addressing the complex issues that affect individuals, families, and communities, both locally and globally. In today’s rapidly changing world, where social inequalities and problems of the marginalised and vulnerable communities are more pronounced than ever, the need for compassionate, skilled, and ethical social workers has never been greater. At IGNOU, we are committed to preparing our students to meet these challenges with empathy, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the values of social justice, human rights, and dignity.
The School offers diverse programmes, ranging from certificate to PhD, designed to offer flexible and accessible learning opportunities for students from varied backgrounds and professions. The Alumni network of the School is very rich and the alumni actively participate in the activities of the School.

She has served three terms of Directorship (15th May, 2009- 31st Jan, 2011) , (1st aug 2012- 31st July, 2015), (05th October, 2023 - till date). She was the Programme Coordinator for M.A. Social Anthropology: Interdisciplinary perspectives (2009-2013). Prof. Shubhangi Vaidya is a sociologist by training. She obtained her MA, MPhil and PhD degrees at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her areas of research interest include disability, neurodiversity, gender and the family. she has several research publications to her credit including two books, 'Autism and The Family in Urban India: Looking Back, Looking Forward' (Springer, 2016) and 'Embodying Motherhood: Perspectives from Contemporary India' (Sage-Yoda Press, 2016 co-authored with Anu Aneja). In IGNOU, she has contributed to programme development in Sociology, Anthropology, Women's and Gender Studies and Environmental Studies. She coordinates courses in the MA Programmes in Migration and Diaspora Studies, Folklore and Culture Studies and Environmental and Occupational Health. She is the Coordinator of the PhD Programme in Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies and guides research across interdisciplinary domains.
Dr. B. Rupini, Professor in Environmental Studies, IGNOU, New Delhi, India. She completed B.Ed, M.Sc., and PhD (Chemistry) from Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana, Post Graduate Diploma in Cheminformatics from the University of Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi and Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. She is the Programme Coordinator for Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental and Occupational Health (PGDENOH), PGDEOHOL, Masters in Environmental and Occupational Health (MAENOH) & Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management and Law (PGDEML) and Course coordinator in Masters in Environmental Science. She is an organic chemist by training who taught in different conventional universities including University of Delhi for 29 years and published many research papers/articles including book chapters, and 4 books in national and international journals and publishers. She has successfully completed three projects funded by UGC, DST-SERB, and DST-INDO PORTUGAL, under University Grants Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology. Her area of research is synthesis and characterization of environmentally benign ionic liquids, biologically active metal complexes and their applications in the synthesis of functionalized chiral amines and Nano anti-malarials and Green Chemistry. She is supervising PhD scholars in the area of environment & green chemistry. She worked in collaboration with scientists from University of Madeira, Madeira, Portugal for DST-INDO PORTUGAL project. She delivered lectures as a keynote speaker and as a resource person on Role of Green Chemistry on Environmental Heath, Role of Green Chemistry in Pharmaceutical Education and Research in various national and international conferences. She is a recipient of ‘Distinguished Scientist’ in 2016 by Centre for Advanced Research and Design, Venus International Foundation, India and Scientist of the year 2017 award by NESA, India, National Environmental Science Academy Fellowship of the year Award by National Environmental Science Academy in 2020 and STE Meritorious Award by Save The Environment organization in 2020. She developed and launched SWAYAM Courses & online programme in the field of Environment.

Dr. Sushmitha Baskar is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Environmental Studies, School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. She earned her M.Sc. (1995) (Gold medalist) and M.Phil. in Environmental Science (1997) from the Department of Environmental Sciences, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. She obtained her Ph.D. in Environmental Science (2002) from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, Haryana. She is awarded various national fellowships: CSIR (SRF), CSIR (RA), CSIR- Pool Scientist (SRA), UGC Dr. DS Kothari post-doctoral fellowship. She is awarded international fellowships: Swiss Fellowship (2002-04) to work at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland, Indo-Norwegian Grant (2008-09) to work at the Centre for Geobiology, University of Bergen, Norway, and Swedish Government Grant (2009) to work at Stockholm University, Sweden where she carried out research in the field of Cave geomicrobiology. She has also visited Technical University, Munich, Germany, Czech Republic, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia for part of her research training and as an invited speaker in trainings and conferences. She was awarded the university Silver medal for “Best research Paper 2019 IGNOU” by the Vice President of India, Sh. Venkaiah Naidu. She was felicitated and featured in the top alumni of Swiss Embassy, New Delhi 2021 for her research work. She is also featured in the book ‘Leading Ladies in Earth Sciences in India’, 2023 for her achievements in geomicrobiology. Her interests include Environmental Science, Environmental Microbiology and Geomicrobiology. She has over 110 publications and has authored 4 books. She is a reviewer in International and National peer reviewed journals. Y.S.C. Khuman is an Associate Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies at IGNOU, New Delhi. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Delhi, focusing on fuelwood issues in the mountain regions of India. With over 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Khuman has significantly contributed to the field of Sustainability Science. He has been actively involved in designing and developing various programs related to Sustainability Science at IGNOU. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Commission on Ecosystem Management for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for the term 2021-2025. His primary research areas include Sustainability Science, Natural Resource Management, Socio-ecological linkages, and Urban Ecology. Dr. Khuman has coordinated multiple academic programs, including the Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainability Science (PGDSS/PGDSSOL) and the Master of Arts in Sustainability Science (MASS/MASSOL). Dr. Abhishek Mishra is an Assistant Professor at the School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies (SOITS), IGNOU, since 4th September 2023. He specializes in Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management (HRM), and Human Values and Ethics. With over five years of research and two years of teaching experience, he previously served as an ICSSR-funded Postdoctoral Fellow at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Dr. Mishra holds a Ph.D. in Management, where he explored leveraging human capital and material resources through insights from the *Shreemad Bhagavad Gita*.
He has authored two books and contributed to several prestigious academic journals. At IGNOU, he also serves as one of the Programme Coordinators for MASSOL and has introduced innovative programmes, such as the Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Arts in Human Values and Ethics. Proficient in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, Dr. Mishra is dedicated to integrating modern management practices with ethical, human-centric education approaches.
