Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC)
The Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC) at IGNOU plays a pivotal role in enhancing educational accessibility through innovative media. It is established to support IGNOU’s commitment to distance learning and online learning, EMPC develops high quality audio visual materials for various academic programmes. In addition to course related materials, the Centre also contributes to the creation of awareness programmes, promotional videos and other media initiatives to showcase IGNOU’s achievements and educational offerings.
Besides the core expertise of the production of curriculum based Audio/ Video programmes, it is also undertaking various training and orientation programmes for faculty members to facilitate the effective use of electronic media in education.
The Centre utilizes advanced technology for producing educational content across various platforms, including television and radio. The Centre is managing the distribution of educational content through various channels such as 24x7 Gyan Darshan TV channel, Gyan Vani FM Radio, Gyandhara (web based Radio), YouTube @EMPCIGNOU, EMPC Facebook page and ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).
The Centre is equipped with the latest ‘state of the art’ facilities which include High Definition (HD) Video Studio, Virtual HD Video Studio, Make up Room, Graphic Unit, Two Audio Studios, Electronic News Gathering (ENG) facility, FM Radio Broadcast, Satellite Uplink facility, Digital Library, Video Server, Non –Linear Edit Suits and Social Media delivery systems.
In keeping the rubric of ‘equitable access to quality higher education’ the University’s philosophy also mandates for provision of quality learning material, audio- video programmes and other multi-media resources. To cater to this philosophy, the Communication Division was established in 1986 with the objective of producing and delivering audio and video programmes related to various courses launched by IGNOU. Over the course of time, this facility bolstered with several improvements especially in post-production areas of editing and graphics handling metamorphosed into Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC) located at IGNOU’s Headquarter.
At the time of its establishment, EMPC was equipped with the most advanced and relevant technology set to facilitate fulfillment of its mandate of production and dissemination of quality audio video course content with the Grant in Aid from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Taking forward IGNOU’s mandate of reaching the unreached, the First Educational TV channel of India, Gyan Darshan was launched in January 2000 through this Centre.
The very next year that is in 2001, Gyan Vani Educational FM Radio Network was launched with the frequency 105.6 MHz and use of 10 KW transmitters strengthened the educational reach of the broadcast of various educational and general programmes. Live phone in Interactive Radio counselling (IRC) Sessions were also started for learners.
Gyan Darshan (GD) TV channel is a major milestone in the field of Education in India. It was initiated as a joint venture of the then Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), now Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), IGNOU and Prasar Bharati. GD is a 24x7 dedicated Educational TV Channel covering a variety of subjects catering to diverse learners.
Teleconferencing: The facility of teleconferencing is extensively used for extending academic support through synchronous mode. The Induction Programmes for new admissions and the Pan India simulcasting Convocation for graduating learner are also being conducted live across all the Regional Centre through Teleconferencing mode every year. Gyan Darshan conducts two hours of live sessions on the working days in the interactive mode to build interactivity during online teaching learning. The live teleconferencing sessions are being simulcast through Swayam Prabha, social media network such as @EMPCIGNOU YouTube channel, Facebook etc.
Taking forward NEP 2020’s emphasis on promotion of regional languages, Gyan Darshan TV channel is broadcasting programmes in about 13 Indian Regional Languages.
GyanDarshan channel is being carried by various DTH service providers such as TATASKY, AIRTEL, SUNDIRECT, DEN, In DIGITAL, HATHWAY, INDEPENDENT etc.
GyanVani:
It is an educational FM radio station which serves as an ideal medium for niche audience addressing the educational, developmental and socio-cultural requirements of the people.
Interactive Radio Counseling (IRC):Interactive Radio Counseling (IRC) facility is being provided by Gyan Vani Stations to enable learners to interact with the Faculty, Academic Counselors and Learner Support Officials. The live phone-in programmes are popular components of the network. The programmes broadcast through GV stations include both pre-recorded and live content.

The Production, Post Production and Transmission facilities at EMPC have been upgraded from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD) facilities including Video Studio, Earth Station, NLE Suites, Installation of Video Server & Digitalization of A/V Library.
The transmission of Gyan Darshan Channel has been upgraded to High Definition (HD) and the live sessions are being simulcast through Social Media such as EMPC-IGNOU YouTube channel & Electronic Media Production Centre-EMPC Facebook page and through Swayam Prabha TV Channel.
Understanding the immense potential of ‘X’ (earlier twitter) EMPC is making the best use of X. The learners are being updated regularly about the live sessions conducted through Gyan Darshan and Gyan Vani channels.
EMPC-YouTube Channel:
@EMPCIGNOU YouTube channel serves as an invaluable platform for the dissemination of educational content, learner support, and other relevant information. It also provides live interaction in the learning process and hosts regular live sessions for the IGNOU learners. Learners have an opportunity of real-time interactivity during counseling, induction programmes, and orientation sessions. This channel features over 700 course-based videos and houses a repository of live interactive sessions exceeding 1,260 hours, with a remarkable viewership of about 2 million and a dedicated subscriber base of 60K, the channel has become a go-to resource for students enrolled in IGNOU courses. The channel has international reach, attracting the learners across the globe.
Facebook:
The Electronic Media Production Centre-EMPC Facebook Page is the official platform of EMPC, IGNOU. This page is the gateway to real-time Live Teleconferencing sessions and video learning contents for the learners. It connects the learners’ to the wealth of resources, including updates about the schedule of Live Teleconference and Interactive Radio Counseling sessions. Additionally, one can access the repository of previously broadcast programs, ensuring the comprehensive learning experience for all.
Bulk SMS services:
In order to encourage IGNOU learners and their active participation in live teleconferencing sessions and IRC sessions, EMPC- IGNOU initiated bulk SMS services for quick reminders.
Bulk Email services:
To ensure effective communication with our learners, EMPC sends regular e-mails detailing schedule for upcoming live Interactive Radio Counselling (IRC) and Live Teleconferencing sessions along with flyers. This approach keep learners informed and engaged allowing them to plan ahead and participate actively in the sessions.
E-Learning Package:
EMPC has undertaken various projects in collaboration with different Ministries and Organizations.
Likewise, EMPC has produced MBA Audio books in collaboration with School of Management Studies.

EMPC’s effective use of these technologies helps bridge communication gaps and keep learnerss connected with the institution. This targeted approach helps in providing timely and relevant information to the learners, enhancing their participation and engagement with the upcoming curriculum based educational programmes.
EMPC has bagged National and International awards and accolades from prestigious agencies such as Sony, UGC-CEC and IGNOU.
