Divergent views have been expressed in relation to applying the management concepts in tourism. Without going into this debate, we believe that the knowledge of certain management concepts and functions is essential for managers in the tourism industry in order to run their organisations successfully. Hence, the need for this course. MTTM-1 i.e. Management Functions and Behaviour in Tourism has been adapted from the MBA courses of IGNOU (MS-1 i.e. Management Functions and Behaviour). It is a modified version keeping in view the requirements of tourism managers.

Each and every segment needs special attention for training skills and this requires proper planning and development. Keeping this in view, we have introduced this course on Human Resources Planning and Development in Tourism. This course has been adapted from 2 MBA courses of IGNOU i.e. MS-22 and MS-23. Certain modifications have been introduced keeping in view the characteristics of the tourism industry.

Tourism is a service industry where, on most of the occasions, the service is produced and consumed simultaneously. Hence, the personnel managing the services play a vital role in the operations. We have adapted this course (MTTM-3) from MS-2, a course of IGNOU’s M.B.A. programme. Certain modifications have been done to make it more relevant for tourism professionals.

Through this course we aim at familiarising our learners with certain basic requirements in IT application. The course is a redesigned model of two Management courses (MS-7 and MS-54) from IGNOU. They have been adapted as per the requirements of tourism professionals along with two Units from IGNOU’s Master in Library and Information Sciences Course MLIS-1. The total course consists of 16 Units. Certain Units are conceptual in nature and you have to link them with managerial tasks in tourism.

This course introduces learners to accounting and finance concepts. It covers accounting framework; financial statements; cost management; financial and investment analysis and financial decisions. For this course, the study material of the MS 4 course of the School of Management is used.

This objective of this course is to acquaint learners with the various marketing principles. It include themes on marketing and its application; marketing planning and organisation; understanding consumers; product management; pricing and promotion strategy and sales distribution stragey and control. For this course, the study material of the MS 6 course of the School of Management is used.

Through this course, we bring to you clarity of concepts for a sales job. This course is a redesigned model of two Management Courses (MS-62 and MS-63) of IGNOU. The adaptation of these courses into MTTM-7 has been done keeping in view the requirements of the tourism industry. Various aspects of management related of Sales like planning and financing etc., have been dealt with in these Units.

With the development of the tourism industry and increase in tourism demand, a tremendous potential has emerged for starting new and small scale enterprises in many areas. Many new forms of tourism have emerged and these provide ample opportunities for entrepreneurs at various destinations to start their business. Many people not only look for jobs but may also like to start their own small enterprise. MTTM-8 is an adapted version of the IGNOU Management course MS-93. Certain features have been added keeping in view the requirements of the tourism sector.

In this course, we have attempted to familiarise you with the various features that are to be researched upon while trying to understand the tourism markets – particularly those for India. We have Units on spurces of tourism information; market research; motivation; market segmentation, targeting and positioning; forecasting; domestic markets; Indian outbound markets; various inbound tourism markets of India and market constraints.

It is not an easy task to discuss tourism impacts at all levels and at all destinations. However, this course attempts to familiarise you with tourism impacts on thematic basis. We start this Course with a debate on sustainable development and the various views expressed in this regard. Other Units include the various types of impacts-economic, social, cultural, political etc.

In this course, we aim at familiarising learners with the varied aspects of tourism planning. It briefly introduces evolution of planning in tourism and goes on to discuss the environmental, social, cultural, economical and political considerations in the context of tourism planning . Keeping in view the significance and the role of research in tourism (planning, impacts, marketing and business operations, etc.) we have MTTM 16, as a compulsory dissertation component of the MTM programme for our learners. It is expected that the dissertation work will enable the students to gain a practical insight into the tourism system, providing the learners relevant experience and exposure to the field situations. This course focuses on practical or field-oriented situations and learners are expected to put into practice all that they have learnt about a particular chosen theme. It is a way of applying the knowledge gained through the theory courses to specific situations in Tourism.

One needs a lot of creativity to produce a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) in the tourist markets. Hence, we developed MTTM-12 as a full-fledged course rather than dealing with product designing only as a component of the marketing mix. The course starts with describing the very nature and characteristics of the services product and the basic features required for developing tourism products. Other important themes include Destination development; Special Interest Tourism and product designing of specific forms of tourism pertaining to culture, pilgrimage, ecology and wild life, adventure, health, island and beaches, ethnic, events, cruises, etc.

As a manager, how to handle different situations, how do train the staff, how to tackle crisis situation, etc. are themes which run through the various Units of this course for different tourism businesses.

In this course, we take up road tourist transport operations which focus on the operations of tourist transport operators providing coach and car services to the tourists. The course starts with an overview of the tourist transport and further deals with aspects related to the tourist transport business- costing, pricing, selling, personnel management in a tourist transport company, transportation laws and regulations, the business of car rental agencies, various leakages that take place in this business along with examples of certain remedial measures.

Meetings, Conventions, Events, Trade Shows, Exhibitions, etc., collectively referred to as MICE are no more considered as isolated events and have a bearing on a destination in relation to both, economy as well as society. In fact, organising such events is now a full-fledged profession. This course devoted to MICE management is designed with the objective to expose learners to all the various aspects and issues involved in this segment. The course begins with an introduction to Business travel and further covers the concept and management issues related to meetings, incentive travel, conventions, exhibitions, trade fairs, travel marts and so on. It also include a Case study on MICE operations that gives a detailed sequential description of the actual work done by a MICE company.
