This is the first Course of the M.Sc ( Home Science – Community Development & Extension Management ) programme which introduces you to the concepts and paradigms of ‘development,’ followed by economic, human and political development. As you move further ahead in the Course, you will learn about development and progress: economic and social dimension; change, modernisation and development; and social, human and gender development. This Course provides an understanding of sustainable development, its parameters, different approaches to the study of sustainable development, and the issues and challenges associated with sustainable development.

This Course also comprehensively covers the evolution and concept of Extension, the global perspective in extension education and the role of private and corporate extension services in India. It further brings out an understanding of the nuances of communication, communication levels and processes, communication theories and models at this juncture, which is crucial.

An attempt has been made to build constructive knowledge on community organisation, best practices in community organisation in extension, community mobilisation and the role of social action & social policy in community development.

This course describes the nuances of integrating ICT tools for teaching and learning systems, the access, understanding and participation in health communication, the technological intervention to empower People with Disabilities to overcome their barriers to reap various services benefits.

This Course orients you to programme planning in extension. It provides knowledge on manpower planning and personnel management in extension and development. The Course also covers mobilisation of resources – human, governmental, non-governmental, and science and technology, as significant components of programme planning and evaluation. Project management of extension programmes, and their monitoring & evaluation are important highlights of this Course.

This Course comprehensively covers sustainable development and strategizing it through community knowledge, harnessing technology, innovative practices, cooperation and partnership. This Course touches upon sustainable livelihood resources and indigenous knowledge for livelihoods. Participatory management, participatory approaches and learning for action have been covered as salient concepts of participatory community development. A major highlight of this Course is researching and working in communities with a thrust on participatory methods in research.

The Field Project in Home Science is a Practicum based form of experiential learning Course. The practical activities listed in the Project Handbook will orient the learners to the use of practical tools, and methods for gathering data. Learners can choose a topic of their interest while doing the M. Sc. Courses of 1st year, and do the ‘Field Project in Home Science.

In this course you will learn about the concepts, approaches, strategies of gender and development. It also covers gender mainstreaming in policy making, gender and market economics and gender work & health.

This is a special Course which takes you through the wide spectrum of Community Science / Home Science and highlights the interlinkages of community development with issues and concerns in community development such as early childhood care, nutrition, health, textiles, handicrafts, gender concerns, disaster management etc. The Course also orients you to resource mobilisation and institutional management by focussing on voluntary organisations, NGOs, CSR, fundraising, capacity building and training of stakeholders in development. The role of contemporary Community Sciences in skilling and human development is a significant component of this Course.

For this purpose, this Course has been designed and comprehensively covers: Prevention in MCH; MCH services; Data and surveillance in MCH; Behaviour change communication; and Implications for adolescent health.

Research Project in Home Science’ can be undertaken with selected voluntary organisations or government agencies, using requisite scientific knowledge in community development and extension management. Tying up your project to a local community / NGO / related institution / organisation will enable you to build insights on how to work on projects in future after completion of the Masters’ programme. The ‘Research Project in Home Science’ can be quantitative as well as qualitative. The learner needs to ensure that the topic has research significance and follows a proper research methodology.

You will also read about the various thematic areas in which CSR intervention can help in development of those sectors. It also discusses the key outcomes of CSR.
