Theories of Translation (MTT-010), is a theoretical course of M.A. (Translation Studies) programme. To understand any discipline or educational subject, first of all it is necessary to be familiar with its theoretical dimension. By getting information about the concept, area, major theories and theorists of that subject, we make a mental map of that very subject; create a conceptual form and outline of it. In this sequence, we try to establish coherence with other aspects of that subject as well.

In this course, an attempt has been made to discuss the principles of translation. This course is divided into four blocks, the concept and importance of translation, Ancient and modern western translation theory, Indian translation theory, translation thinkers have been discussed in detail in different units.

Translation: History and Tradition (MTT-011), is a theoretical course of M.A. (Translation Studies) programme. This course provides and in-depth introduction about the history of translation and its various traditions. Mainly four traditions have been pondered upon in this course. The Asian tradition, Buddhist tradition, Arabic-Persian tradition and Western tradition of translation. While considering all these traditions the topics such as Buddhist tradition of translation, translation of Buddhist texts into Chinese and other Eastern languages, Arabic and Persian translations of Indian texts and Arabic and the tradition of translation of Persian texts into Indian languages have been explained. The Western tradition of translation has been discussed in three chronological periods, vis-a-vis Ancient, Medieval and Modern period, along with this the European and North American tradition of translation has been discussed separately. We hope that this course will inspire the scholars of translation studies to do remarkable work in this direction by acquiring information about the history and traditions of translation.

"Translation and Linguistics" is the third course in the Master’s program in Translation Studies. This course welcomes learners to delve into the critical role of linguistics in translation studies. Language, a fundamental medium of human communication, is integral to the translation process. Its scientific study not only acquaints us with linguistic elements but also aids in a comprehensive understanding of language, its components, and other related aspects.

This course will discuss the concept of language, its scope, linguistic systems, applications in communication, and various factors influencing language. Other units in this course will also cover sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics, semiotics, phonology, transcription and transliteration, discourse analysis, stylistics, semantics, and applied aspects of linguistics such as contrastive analysis.

For simplicity, the course is divided into four blocks, each comprising a set of logically and practically structured units to enhance understanding.

‘Areas of Translation’ (MTT-013) covers various functional areas of translation. This course, divided into four blocks and comprises 16 units, discusses the status, need and other dimensions of translation within various parallels like Administrative Translation, Translation in Parliament, Translation of Knowledge Text (Humanities, Social Sciences, Science & Technology), Legal Translation, Translation of Commercial Literature, and Banking Literature. Translation in Tourism and Translation in Education are also covered in the course.

Although translation in the field of literary subjects and mass media are also prominent areas of translation, however these are independently designed courses and are the part of our M.A. (Translation Studies) programme as MTT-015 (Translation and Literature) and MTT-016 (Translation and Mass Communication).

Translation and Indian Languages(MTT 014) is a Course of MA Translation Studies programme. This four-credit course has a total of 4 blocks divided into 14 units.

This course deals with various Indian language families, Modern Indian Languages and their translations, concept of multi lingualism and the role of translation in Nation building. Under this course, Indian classical literature written in various historical times has been discussed in detail and role of translation has also been underlined in this process.

Translation and Literature(MTT 015) is a Course of MA Translation Studies programme. This four-credit course has a total of 4 blocks divided into 17 units.

Under the course 'Translation and Literature', the problems related to translation of different genres of literature and the strategies to address those translational problems and the various dimensions pertaining to them, have been discussed. It is only through the translation of literature that the connection between different aspects of world literature, Indian literature and comparative literature are discussed. Hence, this course deals with all these aspects in detail.

Our era is an era of revolution in mass media communication. In this context, TV, films, radio, internet, social media, etc. have become an integral part of life, and it has become difficult to imagine life without them. Since the process of globalization has unified the world, the movement of people speaking different languages from one place to another has increased, and the use of these mass communication media has increased. Therefore, the role of translation as a communication medium has increased significantly. Along with the traditional use of translation, it is used in the form of conversion, dubbing, and subtitling. In this course, the role of translation and mass communication media, and the relationship between them, will be discussed. Print, electronic, and new media are dealt with at length in this course, including script writing and adaptation.

Using the terms ‘Lexicography’ and ‘Technical Terminology’ broadly one realizes that these two are different concepts. But both are basically the same and are related to ‘words’ and its implied meaning and more.

Lexicography is the science of dictionary making. As the title of this course suggests, lexicography and technical terminology and their relationship with translation have been made the basis of study. Keeping this in mind, the present course is divided into four blocks, of which the first two blocks deal with ‘Lexicography and Translation’ and the next two blocks deal with ‘Technical Terminology and Translation’. The concept and dimensions of Dictionary and Lexicography; process of dictionary making, computer and online dictionaries and utility of dictionaries in translation are dealt with in the first two blocks in different units. In the third block, concept of words; nature, types and characteristics, development and standardization of technical terminology have been discussed in detail. The last block deals with different schools, principles and strategies of technical terminology. Different aspects related to translation of technical terminology are also discussed in this block along with the sources and challenges of Collecting Technical Terminologies.

Translation and Intercultural Studies(MTT 018) is a Course of MA Translation Studies programme. This four-credit course has a total of 4 blocks divided into 12 units.

Translation plays a key role in making a culture universal or global. It acts as a bridge between and among cultures taking language/s as medium. Under this course Intercultural Communication, Role of Translation in Multicultural Society, Journey of Ideas and Translation and Translation and Global Culture have been discussed. After studying this course, the learners would be able to understand the key concepts of translation, culture and communication in detail.

Politics of Translation(MTT 019) is a Course of MA Translation Studies programme. This four-credit course has a total of 4 blocks divided into 14 units.

This course deals with the topics i.e. Translation as Appropriation, Indian Renaissance, Indian Freedom Movement, Colonialism and its impact on Indian knowledge system. Politics of Translation opens a wider perspective to look at translation studies. Accordingly, this course also addresses the issues like diaspora writing, subaltern writing, language movement, role of English in Indian society in the light of post-colonialism. Separate units are included to address all these topics in detail.

We study courses on theoretical, historical, linguistic, and translation-related tools for translation as well as the practical process of translation. The course, titled ‘Process of Translation’ will introduce students to the process and methodology of translation, types of translation, limitations of translation, and evaluation tools and processes in translation. This course intends to move learners will be able to become aware of some specific genres of translation so that they can adopt a viewpoint in accordance with its peculiarities while translating. Machine translation has also been included as a special entry in this course and is becoming established as an important technology-inspired translation genre.

Translation Training(MTT 021) is a Course of MA Translation Studies programme.

This course related to translation training has four blocks. In the first block (Copyright Act and Translation Rights), has two units 'Copyright Act: Concept and Importance' and 'Role of Copyright Act in Translation and Adaptation'. These provide sufficient information on various aspects of copyright. In the second block (Professional Ethics and Code of Conduct), we study professional integrity and etiquette for translation, publication and presentation of other genres. The third block (Translator and linguistic competence), acquaints learners about the linguistic competence of the translator as well as the subtleties of translation skill. The fourth block (Means of translation), talks about 'Importance of translation training', 'Culture and environment of language' and 'Text and language discussion'. This final block enables us to understand the subtleties of translation training.
