Introduction

In collaboration with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (An Autonomous body under Minister of Education), the School of Education, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) conducts Certificate in Professional Development of Teachers (CPDT) Programme of six-month duration for about 10000 in-service teachers working at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. The programme focuses on building capacities of in-service teachers on managing students’ mental health issues by developing basic guidance and counseling skills among teachers, strengthening teachers’ skills for self-management (including managing their own stress) so that they can build their capacity to handle all possible challenges of their professional as well as personal life in Navodaya; and developing good institutional life and culture within Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya campuses.

Objective

The Programme aims to familiarize the teachers with the basic skills of guidance and counseling to address the mental health as well as adolescence related challenges including learning and career related issues. As well to facilitate teachers’ understanding and practicing of various skills and techniques for promoting self-management to create an effective environment to work for the betterment of the students; systematize experiences and strengthen teachers’ professional competencies to promote positive institutional life and culture within Navodaya campuses.
